Setting up AIM 5.9 & Joining my Custom Server!

07/20/26

AIM? In 2026? Why?

Because I can! The actual answer is I was inspired by a video a friend sent to me. Forget Discord, I'm switching back to AIM by Veronica Explains

So, with the attached blog and a lot of hours, I got my own server set up and fully accessible with web signup!

but WAIT. Before you think of throwing together your own server or even joining mine, you must understand, Clients are not easy to source and your best bet is going to be the original AIM client.

AIM is quite old now, and while that is probably a selling point to you, its not the best expierence, and I still haven't successfully set it up on linux despite a few hours of attempts. (08-13-26: I have done it using an old version of pidgin, but for some reason it opens 20 browser tabs whenever you reconnect so... i dont know yet.)

If you are still interested though, continue reading and i'll walk you through the steps on WINDOWS ONLY (currently anyway) to get it set up.

AIM in 2026.

Here's what you'll need:

Windows (Currently, Linux is still being worked on.)

The Text Guide for Windows! (Photos coming eventually)

First, download the AIM installer above!

Then you'll run through the installer, uncheck the toolbar, click next until it asks for a zipcode (you can enter any string of 5 numbers, doesn't need to be your actual zipcode), just hit next some more until it starts actually installing.

Once its done installing, open task manager and close out AIM.exe (it auto-runs no matter what, even if it doesn't show it.)

Once its closed, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\AIM and delete aimapi.dll

Now you need to open the properties for Aim.exe and set its compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 3)

From here, AIM is now finished being set up. HOWEVER: the official AIM servers aren't around anymore. You must know a custom server to use AIM, for example, mine!

You can sign up at the signup page above! Once you've done that, you'll have a login!

Now open AIM, cancel the screen name pop up and click Setup

In the bottom right will be a Connection button, click it and change the Host to aim.localfox.dev, this is the only setting on the page that you need to change, you can fully close out settings after that

Now enter your screenname and password you set earlier and connect

IT WILL FAIL, THIS IS OKAY

Go back to Setup, Go to Connection, and remove the extra character it added to the host, then close back out of setup again

It should now let you sign in and you will be presented with the buddy window!

If you want to add a buddy, add me! I am localfox (though the video guide shows localfoxIsCool, that is just a demonstration alt)
